Here are the ones with 100% IBE

The hanging basket is really heavy after watering with 100% IBE. I later decided to stand them on the shelf.

The second succulent could be difficult. First one may or may not. What is the direction of your corridor facing? As a safety precaution, it is best to inspect your plants daily to make sure they do not suffer from sun burns.

Happy growing! :flowers:/>

hi,

just to share based on my experience.

your sempervivum oddity will look ugly soon, as the bottom rosette starts to push the plant upwards and it will look a little lika a porcupine.
my compactum pachyphytum takes only bright light (meaning no direct sun) and grows painfully slow.
my cotelydon which looks very similar to yours, had a flower stalk which dried out even though I only provided it with bright light.
my gasteria or "ox tongue" is drying out even though I do water it, and it seems to be dying on me, and I dun know whats wrong.

the rest of my haworthias are growing fine with my bright airy growing conditions. I have never grown tiger claws so nothing to comment. hope this helps! :D/>

cheers,

ben

Tiger claws or Faucaria tigrina can be grown in Singapore surprisingly and need filtered sun. It cannot stand full sun or it will turn light green. If grown well, it may even bloom for you.

derelor - I am surprised that you are having problems with gasterias. I think our conditions are similar and if you cannot, I will also not able to grow as well. I heard that they have a distinct dormant season. Hmm... hopefully some gasteria experts here can shed some light on this. I like gasterias too as it takes up less space than others.

As a general rule, those succulents with fat fat cute cute leaves usually are difficult to grow here as it requires cooler temperature to maintain its adorable shape. Thus cotyledons are out for us. If you find one that can grow here, do let me know. :P/> Cotyledons have always been my favourite. Sigh!

I should be facing NNW. Getting morning sun and slight afternoon. Soon it will be changing to more afternoon and less morning. The other half of the year it's totally indirect sun.

How to check for sun burn?

It is Gasteria armstrongii. Gasteria is generally not difficult but it prefer compost with added humus, alternatively can grow it by "orchid style", too.

The leaf will turn pale green and soon it will turn a bit black for the tiger claws. Hmm..basically your area is good for cacti and succulents. Even though it is indirect sun, as long as the plants are not blocked or shaded, the light intensity will still be there. Who knows. It might trigger blooming. Good growing. :flowers:/>

Wow! There are hidden dragons and crouching tigers in the forum. Damian, I seldom see ur posts. Should post mah. I am trying very hard to promote this cacti hobby in Singapore. TMO very shiong one. Can give tips how to grow gasteria successfully? Do they have a dormant period where watering has to be withheld or just water when dry culture will do? What is orchid style growing? It seems that derelor is having problems with his gasteria. :o/>

Yes, I agree with Boonboon. More posts are needed!!!

I really need help for gasteria, if not mine will turn into dried vegetable soon.

As for purchases, the best place to get them is at pioneer and WF, but WF shipment not very consistent. Good thing is they are opposite each other, so can visit both together. My favourites that I have seen at pioneer is NOID Lithops and haworthias; echeverias and aeonium(once only) at WF. I am still hoping I will be able to chance on the aeonium again.

Boonboon,
Mine seems to be doing well. Recently re-bloomed again. Refer to this thread.

Hi Boonboon, don't mention it. I'm definitely not dragon nor tiger :D/>
I'm not sure whether Gasteria has a dormant period (at least not in our warm & humid env). I water mine generously whenever they are dry and so far got no problem of rotting. The oldest one is about 10years already but still remain relatively small. Another thing I notice is that they don"t like dense and heavy compost like burn-earth.
Btw orchid-style means no compost at all, same as growing orchid... but need frequent watering and fetilizing. It was actually discovered by my mom when she mistaken one of my dying gasteria as orchid :hysterical:/> and managed to revive it vigorously. Few species of sempervivum can be grown this way, too.

That is interesting. What kind of potting materials do you use for your orchid and their composition? Share share leh. Wow! Sempervivums also can flourish. Can share your secrets and how long your semps been with you and what are the species that can grow here? Do you manage to get your semps grow or even bloom? Sorry for the so many questions but I think you may have striken the right spot. I have read semps and echeverias do well in dry corners where there is no soil but dirt. Any pics to show us? :D/> So there is hope that I could grow the S&E again. :drunk:/>

Hey Boonboon, I'm using mixture of charcoal, broken bits of claypot/brick and chunky dry clay (like those found in burn-earth). As for my semps, they are able to survive thats all, never bloom... but the mother plant will always die after a year+ when it has produced several pubs, and the cycle repeats. I have no idea what are the species :blush:/> (3 of them) but definitely not those hairy types. 2 of them are living with my mom's orchid in M'sia (can't remember how long, roughly about 5 yrs or so), I have only 1 with me now in Singapore which I bought from cameron 4 mths back, will try take some pics over the weekend.
Have never try Echeverias this way... getting a little itchy already :P/>

Hi Darelor, currently I'm also using commercial mixed (JAB Cacti Compost) for my gasterias, but I added a little humus and so far they are growing. I think they prefer bright light than direct sunlight, whereas Echeveria prefer direct sunlight. I grow mine in light-shade :)/>
