How to propagate ficus

Seems like it is not easy to propagate ficus through cutting.
My neighbour has a nice verigated F. benjiman and we have twice failed to root the cutting :-( Is air-layering the only effcetive method to propagate Ficus ?

BTW, Is Air-layering the same as marcoting ?

Depending on the variety, normally, woody cuttings needs a more concentrated rooting hormone like 'dip n grow' to assist in rooting.
Air-layering is a good way to propagate the plant.

Benjamina looks easy enuff.. just cut pieces and poke them as many as u can in a pot.. when they have rooted, can just separate them.. As lyndi have suggested earlier, the use of a rooting agent is most advisable..

Currently there are a lot of successes by using perlite as the rooting medium instead of soil.. U might want to try that..

another thing to do is that u mayn wish to use mature cuttings they may root better. cut them sideways, wrap that in moist sphagnum and sink their bases into course sand that is kept moist. ficus root better at branch nodes. if the sand is loose u may provide a stick or two for support. spraying their leaves with water or cutting off most of the old leaves will increase rooting chances too.
