All plant lovers who have been to Bangkok will have heard of the famous Chatuchak Market. It is virtually a tropical plant lover's paradise, a wide range of plants can be found on sale, which include orchids, aquatic plants, cacti and succulents, popular ornamentals like the Adenium and Plumeria, and numerous exotics. Hi Every one,

My name is Jerry. I live in Bangkok, Thailand. I could provide some information. I am the lover of Platycerium and Fern.

The famous Chatuchak Market that you are talking about. It is not the
[glow=red:461ba61c70]Nurseries[/glow:461ba61c70]. It is a huge place out door opening space for whom do want to place their products on Selling & Buying.
It like you go to shopping mall. They sell everything Brands, No Brands and imitate (piracy) products.

By our admin said "A Tropical Plant Lover's Paradise". I agree only on who is living in BKK or in Thailand. It is a paradise for me if I am have a lot of money to spend. But I am not sure that when you guys coming to
shopping in Chattujak (JJ-JayJay) Thailand then you could take it back to your home specially on the origin plant (Jungle). Could you get pass on Customs Department at the Airport.

That all I could say it by now. If you have any more questions please make converastion, I will anaswer on subject that I could.

Thanks,

Jerry

If you want to see more fern, you could visit my friend store on
http://www.thaifern.com/family.html and

If you people have more time, do ALSO visit the plant and flower market at Thewet (or Thewej) in BKK. This place is along the Chao Phraya River - get a river taxi from anywhere and drop at the Thewet Pier. Go in the morning where it is most peaceful and you can see the temples - Wat Arun etc on the way if you are travelling up from Sathorn Pier.

This part of the river teem with catfishes which many people come to watch and feed. The nearby market also sells catfish for you to buy and release into the River as good karma (I suppose they get caught back again for rerelease by some other poor souls.... poor fish).

Anyway you can get good bargains for plants, pots and other garden accessories at Thewet 6 days away - I think the traders from here go over too Chatuchak on Sundays. I am not very sure becoz I had not been to Thewet on Sundays. (anyway Chatuchak is not a solely Sunday affair anyway. Majority of the shops at Chatuchak are open everyday, with traders having permanent addresses at Chatuchak).

Do visit Thewet and see the plants next time you go BKK.

Do also look out for plant or floral exhibitions when you travel. You can buy local papers and see whats on that particular dates. You'd be surprised with what you can find and how cheap things can be. Most recently I attended a plant show at the Sheraton in Bkk - one booth were selling Tillandsias at 100 bhats! Bought back quite alot to give away as presents.

I am a newbie of GCS. Today I just browsed your article about Chatuchat on Plants section. I have been to Bangkok but have not yet visited Chatuchat. Wau! Probably I will die seeing millions of new plants there!

"could you get past customs at the airport!" do you mean the customs leaving Bankok or the country I am going home to?
I am curious if you have customs leaving Bangkok

Just FYI for those who are going to Chatuchak for plants, do it on Wednesaday instead of weekend. I was told that Wednesday is a wholesale day for plants, thus the whole Chatuchak will be flooded with only plants, you will not see puppies, clothes, etc, there. Anyone here been there on Wednesday? Any pictures to share?

yes, my Thai fren told me the same thing. He visits the market on Wed as early as 6am. The plant wholesale thing will spill over to Thu. I managed to visit only on a Thu morning so far. My Thai fren helped translate, otherwise, I suspect language might be a problem.

Thanks Stubtail, I just got to know this recently. I am flying off in a Airasia Good Friday eve flight which I booked almost half a year ago, so missed the Wed & Thur. Have you been there on Friday? I hear it is a wholesale day too, but not solely plants, it is for all kinds of products.

Hey guys,

So inspiring to read the posts here. I just came back from my Thailand last 2 weeks ago. It's so wonderful to see so many beautiful plants at such a low price! :lol:/>

I got some water lily seed back but wana ask if anyone knows where can I get the soil for them? Didn't have the time to go plant nurseries to source yet.

I really think we shd org a trip there over. My frds who go with me go not share the same passion for plants except for 1. Rgd the custom wise, anyone has any idea? The restrictions etc? I hand carried 3 small pots of orchid plants across and I went thru thou..

Hi,

I just returned from my BKK trip. Confirmed that most stalls in Chatuchak do not operate on Friday, Friday was their set up day, but one might still be able to get some purchases there with almost no crowd (this was the most confortable part :P/>).

As my intention to Chatuchak was for orchids shopping, but was surpised that there were lesser and lesser orchids there. In fact, I could find more orchids at Or Tor Kor side than in Chatuchak, and maybe this place had becomes a tourist attraction, the prices were also getting higher. I was told by the vendors there that Wednesday & Thursday would be a better day to shop for plants as you would have more choices and lower prices.

I was been advised to visit the Thonburi Market, on the west of BKK, deeper into Thonburi side which was normally not shown on the BKK map, you may have to book a return taxi there from BKK. There were about ten over orchid stalls (or maybe up to 20) and the prices are much cheaper than Chatuchak. The whole place was almost like new Chatuchak, selling all kind of things, lesser crowd that also allowed me to have a more relax shopping. For Paph lovers, that place might be a heaven, there were 2 stalls that sell only this genus. I understand that more orchid stalls are located there was because that location was nearer to the nurseries.

Anyone else here been to the Thonburi Market? You may want to share your experience. ^_^/>

I went on weekend, but was told that they open everyday. timing should be ard 7am - 5pm, something like Chatuchak timing. If u go there, u can feel that it is just like a miniature Chatuchak.
